Digital Transformation at SBM Offshore
SBM Offshore went through a significant digital transformation journey. Historically, departments within SBM made independent decisions regarding software, leading to a fragmented digital environment. Recognising the need for a unified strategy, Rik embarked on a mission to harmonise the software portfolio and instilled an aligned digital vision and mission across the organisation.
The ‘Smart Execution Program’ transformed project execution by promoting collaboration, enhancing data availability, and improving decision-making with user-friendly dashboards and KPIs, boosting operational efficiency.
In a second phase the strategic impact broadened, notably adding fleet operations to the scope through the “Lifecycle Digital Twin” program. This initiative was a strategic move to instil a vision within SBM Offshore’s Digital Transformation. The essence of the Lifecycle Digital Twin, a virtual representation of an asset, perfectly complements the companies engaged in the engineering, construction, installation, and operation of complex assets.
Virtual Commissioning: A Digital Twin Success Story
The introduction of the Lifecycle Digital Twin marked a new era for SBM Offshore, transforming operational paradigms and setting new industry standards. One of the most notable achievements was the development and implementation of a Simulator for offshore plants (FPSOs) as part of the Digital Twin. This innovative, Simulation-based Digital Twin solution, emulating real-time sensors and process systems, was deployed during the construction phase, enabling virtual start-up testing and validation. The impact was profound: significant cost savings, reduced risk, and enhanced operational readiness prior to actual commissioning.
Through his efforts, SBM Offshore not only navigated its digital transformation journey successfully but also set a benchmark for future projects.
